GNOMES FARMING CO-OP OPEN DAYS
We've started doing Open Days for our urban farming sites around Melbourne. We had so much fun at our Westgarth open day in early 2016 that we're now doing them occasionally at all of our sites!
So come check out the Gnomes Gardens at one of our open days - we've got a variety of productive urban paradises in Melbourne’s inner north! Find out about our fantastic share-farming system and how you can create your own. Chow down on delicious afternoon tea delights straight from our garden! We also sell delicious garden preserves & homegrown seedlings, with all proceeds going towards growing gardens in our neighbourhood. Keep an eye on our Facebook page to see if there's an Open Day coming up near you! Hope to see you there Gnomes! |
The last Preston Open day had cake, choko, and kiddies, with gnomes galore

This April, we invited folks to hop on their bike & join the Gnomes Farming Co-operative for a morning of foraging fruit fun as we swooped on the bounty of backyards, railway verges and nature strips across Melbourne’s inner north! It was BYO bike & basket to benefit from the bounty.
Non-bike-abled people were encouraged to participate via a map of the ride’s meeting points, which culminated at All Nations Park in Northcote. Foragers were finding Walnuts, Nashi and Persimmons aplenty! The event was pretty awesome, with daring fruit pickers and excitable on-lookers, and of course, abundance to share afterward. Watch this space folks, cause this is one we'll definitely be doing again! |

Gnomes at Perry St FestivalWe had a grand old time at the Friends of the Earth Perry St Festival back in December, 2015. We had some great representation from Livelyhood and our Gnomes Farming Co-op - selling seasonal seedlings, cutesy succulents and informative zines. And of course, being a festival, there was great music, yummy food, and we were right in the midst of some inspiring and synchronous energy and affiliate groups. Long story short, an awesome time was had by all and we'll be doing more festivals and stalls in future.

FERMENTING DAYSSo, here at the Livelyhood - we love fermenting, we love pickling... we pretty much love anything to do with preserving food and making it more yummy, nutritious and sustainable. Hence, we run regular co-op fermenting days where we skill share our knowledge and come together to bash out some kraut.
At a recent fermenting day we learnt how to make Nuka Zuke - huzzah! Gnome Maude hosted with her lovely friend Hiromi, who demonstrated her Nuka Zuke bed (Japanese bran pickles). Nuka was delicious, and pretty darn easy to make... and of course we love kraut so other folks made a fresh batch of sauerkraut to share amongst the co-op. If you want to come along to a fermenting day, just let us know... we have one at least every few months. The next one is planned for May 8th, and we'll be doing Kimchi! Co-op fermenting and social days are created by co-op members for co-op members and those connected to the network, so if you'd like to be involved in this event or others like it, we'd love to hear from you! Please contact Livelyhood. |
MUSHROOM MEET & SPORE
Sooo, we like mushrooms. A lot. There! We said it. While a mushroom co-op is in the works in the background, a bunch of us decided we couldn't wait to play around with mycelium! In September 2015, we had our first Fungi meeting to plant some spores. We also did a bit of a Gnomes seedling & seed swap in prep for spring. First we drilled into a variety of freshly found logs, and then fitted in a bunch of mycelium inoculated dowels and then plugged them with beeswax. Now our little logs are blossoming and we wait with patience til we have some amazing oyster and shiitake` mushies! Thanks to all who spread mycelium spores and shared seeds, and particularly to Maude for organising, and Chamali for sharing skills and knowledge!
